What Is a Fungal Nail Infection?

Fungal nail infection, medically termed onychomycosis or tinea unguium, is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. Approximately 50% of abnormal toenails result from such infections affecting the nail bed, matrix, or plate. The condition impacts up to 3% of the population, with higher prevalence in men over age 40.

Causes

• Primary organism: usually caused by Trichophyton rubrum
• Exposure to damp public areas: swimming pools, locker rooms, showers
• Nail trauma increasing susceptibility
• Diabetes, circulatory problems, and immune-deficiency disorders
• History of athlete's foot and excessive perspiration

Symptoms

• Thickened, discolored nails (yellow, brown, or white)
• Darker coloration and foul-smelling nails
• Debris collecting beneath the nail plate
• Brittle, crumbling nail texture
• Infection capable of spreading to other nails or skin

Treatment Options

Conservative / Topical

• Daily cleansing routines and manual debridement
• Over-the-counter liquid antifungals
• Prescription topical medications
• FDA-approved oral antifungals (approximately 3 months duration)
